The Hungarian capital is of course really three cities in one: Buda and Óbuda on the west bank of the Danube river and Pest on the east bank. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it’s a great destination for any weekend trip for group holidays.
Location: Hungary.
Closest Airports: Budapest Airport (BUD).
Local Currency: Hungarian Forints.
The gastronomic scene in Budapest is constantly evolving and restaurants are opening and closing every day. So rather than mention specific restaurants, we’d suggest instead that you head for Liszt Ferenc tér (a trendy square with many great places to eat), Andrássy Avenue or the area just east of St. Stephen’s Basilica. The city has no shortage of bars.
Craft beers are a speciality at Élesztő, Anker Klub is a pub, café and art gallery all in one, while Bar Pharma specialises in cocktails. The club scene is healthy with Morrison’s 2, Fat Mo’s, and Angel in District VII (open to everyone but known for transvestite performance shows) worth looking into when you are planning your trip.
It would be a shame indeed to visit such a beautiful city and not take in sights like the stunning Matthias Church, Vajdahunyad Castle, Széchenyi Chain Bridge or Citadella. Make sure you go to New York Palace too as it’s really much more than just a café: it’s an ornate masterpiece of a building that is worth the slightly expensive price of a coffee and cake. The Danube dominates the city, so why not take your group holiday party on a boat trip? A sightseeing cruise is one option and can include extras such as dinner or wine tasting.
Alternatively, you can save money by buying a ticket for one of the scheduled boat or ferry services. Some quirky place to visit include Buda Castle, Budapest Pinball Museum, Palvolgyi Caves and the Underground Railway Museum. The funicular railway up to Castle Hill is a quick and cheap bit of fun. And don’t miss out on tram rides on line 2, which covers some of the best sights in the city.
No matter what type of group holiday in Budapest you are planning, we can source for you a suitable hotel. Examples include Lánchíd 19 Design Hotel (affordable but smart), Hotel Palazzo Zichy (a former palace), Estilo Fashion Hotel (ultra-stylish) and Holiday Beach Budapest (a ‘wellness hotel’ with spa, hairdressers and masseurs on site).
