Nightlife

Madrid NightlifeAs is usually the case in Spain, locals of all ages see a night out as the norm in Madrid, so you will feel part of something really special. It all starts with a great dinner, so celebrate in style at the Ramon Freixa Madrid at the Hotel Unico, with its two Michelin Stars, the significantly less expensive Taberna Los Huevos de Lucio or the value-for-money La Sanabresa.

Then try bars such as Dry Cosmopolitan Bar for pricey but delicious cocktails, Fatigas del Querer for drinks and tapas with the locals, Il Morto Che Parla (‘The Dead Guy That Speaks’) for a dark, moody drinking den or Café Central for some excellent live jazz to go with your drinks. Meanwhile, clubs include Marula for soul and R&B, Joy Eslava for a mainstream experience that everyone will enjoy, and the huge Kapital with its seven storeys of dancefloors, bars, karaoke and even a cinema.

What to see

What to see in MadridGet your comfy shoes on (or buy a metrobus ticket to use the metro and the bus) and get exploring. Three squares worth a visit are the Plaza Mayo, the Plaza de Cibeles and the Puerta del Sol, while the Gran Villa is known as ‘the street that never sleeps’ and is lined with shops and restaurants. For trying some local food on the go, the Mercado de San Miguel is a market that looks as beautiful as the food you’ll find there tastes. On Sundays, El Rastro street market has been there for 500 years, has more than 1,000 stalls and is also home to many excellent bars serving tasty tapas alongside the drinks.

History lovers should visit Parque del Oeste, a park near the Royal Palace, for its 4,000 year-old Temple of Debod. This is a temple to an Egyptian goddess that was moved here from Egypt to preserve it from flooding. If art is more your passion, museums include the Prado (with paintings by Goya, Raphael, Rubens and many more) and Reina Sofia (for Picasso and Dalí to name just two).
