Liverpool is without doubt one of the best cities for a night out. There’s a constantly evolving scene with new innovations every year, alongside a more traditional pub culture. Add in brilliant cuisine, live music, theatre and stand-up comedy, and your group is pretty much guaranteed a great night out, every night.
Starting with pubs, for a traditional-yet-modern vibe, cheap drinks and a mixed crowd of all ages, head for the Grapes on Matthew Street (also known for its regular live music). Another pub with live music is the Shipping Forecast in the heart of the Rope Works. And following the trend for converting business premises into pubs, the Old Bank on James Street has stunning décor and a mezzanine floor that can be booked by large groups.
The club scene is equally diverse, with raucous LGBTQ+ hangouts like GBar and the Navy Bar, huge clubs for a huge night out like Fusion and Electrik Warehouse, and Liverpool club institutions like the Arts Club. Some clubs have a distinctive theme, like Ink Bar where you can get fake or real tattoos, and Popworld that’s all about nineties and noughties nostalgia.
The only problem you’ll have with a group holiday in Liverpool is deciding what to do from hundreds of options. It’s a beautiful city, so you’ll certainly enjoy sightseeing in Liverpool. Group activities are also here in abundance, from museum visits to fast and frantic experiences with a party theme.
Liverpool City Centre
Liverpool’s City Centre has everything your group could possibly want, so where do you start? One option is to book a guided tour to get a good overview of the city in just a couple of hours. Look out for guides wearing official Blue or Green Badges of the Liverpool City Region Tourist Guides Association. You can take walking, bus or riverboat tours, hop on a “ferry ‘cross the Mersey”, or even book your own driver for a more personal experience.
Some of the main visitor attractions in the City Centre are Royal Liver Building, both of the city’s cathedrals, Sefton Park, Strawberry Field and Anfield Stadium.
For classic fun Liverpool group activities, there are several escape room destinations, stand-up comedy at Laughterhouse Comedy, nerf gun madness at Nerf Centre Liverpool and The VRVE for awesome virtual reality gaming. And if you’re organising a hen do, you have to book in with Get Nude Life Drawing!
When it comes to food, head for the Bold Street neighbourhood behind Liverpool Central Station. This area is perhaps the highlight of the city’s culinary scene, with food from around the world for all tastes and budgets. Another place to check out is Smithdown Road district, which also has a huge selection of restaurants.
Most of the areas listed below are within the City Centre, but they all have their own identities and histories…
St George’s Quarter
This is the area around Lime Street Station that’s home to impressive Victorian architecture and three fantastic theatres: The Liverpool Empire, Royal Court and the Playhouse. Taking in a play, show or comedy night would be great for your group if you get the chance while in the city. St George’s Quarter is also home to St Johns Shopping Centre and some excellent bars and restaurants on Queen Square.
Rope Walks
Rope Walks is the area running from Lydia Ann Street to Renshaw Street east-to-west, and from Roscoe Street to Hanover Street north-to-south. Taking its name from the rope-making industry that once thrived in the area, today it’s home to a number of excellent independent shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars. If you’re sightseeing, make sure you visit St. Luke’s Church – known by locals as the Bombed Out Church as it lost its roof in World War 2. Nowadays it’s home to events from craft fairs to live music. Culture lovers should pop into Bluecoat, a thriving hub for art, literature, music and dance.
Hope Street Quarter
Centred around the area between Liverpool’s two cathedrals, this is a place to stroll and take in the Georgian architecture and cobbled streets. It’s an area known for its cultural life, with theatres (including the Everyman) and concert spaces, as well as excellent restaurants. If you’re just there for a bit of a stroll, take a rest at the famous Philharmonic Pub (or ‘Philharmonic Dining Rooms’ to give it its proper name) and soak in the amazing architectural decor.
Baltic Triangle
Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle is becoming known as the city’s creative district, thanks to its plethora of creative, media and marketing businesses. For tourists, the reason to visit the Baltic Triangle is Cains Brewery with its pop-up restaurants including Baltic Market for street food and Lu Ban for Chinese cuisine. You’ll also find arcade games, crazy golf and bingo venues – perfect for a group looking for some fun and variety.
China Town
To the south of the City Centre is one of Europe’s most established Chinese communities. Liverpool is actually twinned with Shanghai and the arch that welcomes you to Chinatown was imported from Shanghai. Browse through a Chinese supermarket or two before choosing a restaurant for lunch or dinner. There’s a huge selection, but for a quick snack try Tokyo Noodle Bar, and for great service with delicious food we’d suggest New Capital.
Cavern Quarter
You can’t talk about Liverpool without mentioning the Beatles, and the Cavern Quarter celebrates where it all started. The area is home to the world famous The Cavern, and the Beatles Museum. There are also other music venues in the Cavern Quarter, including the long-established Eric’s Club on Matthew Street. The area is also home to Roxy Ball Room, which brings together ‘booze and ball games’, with ten-pin bowling, golf, beer pong and other games – plus a rooftop bar!
The Docks
Liverpool’s history is very much about its docks, and nowadays the area has been reinvented as a leisure destination. The hub of the area is Royal Albert Dock. This is where you’ll find several visitor attractions, including the Maritime Museum, Tate Liverpool and the Beatles Story. There are also more than 20 bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants, catering for almost every taste and budget.
As you’d expect from a large modern city, Liverpool group hotels cover everything from budget hotels to boutique luxury, and from compact locations to the big chains. There’s Central Station Hotel with a flexible choice of rooms, some of which can sleep 4 or more people: ideal for stag and hen weekends in the city centre. The big brand names include Campanile Liverpool at Queens Dock and Novotel in the City Centre.
The Municipal Hotel is a simply stunning choice for luxury Liverpool group accommodation. Set in a magnificent building that was once home to the City Council, each room has its own unique styling. There’s a great restaurant and an onsite pool/spa facility. Upgrade to a superior room for pampering including a Nespresso machine and soft bathrobes.
At the other end of the scale, for Liverpool group accommodation on a budget we’d suggest taking a look at the International Inn. This is a clean, well-rated hostel near Rope Walks that has multiple room options, a games room and kitchen.
Party Apartments Liverpool
Another option is to book centrally located group party apartments. Liverpool accommodation operators recognise the demand for this and there are many to choose from. Water Street by Ustay Apartments is a good example: a selection of well-appointed 2 and 3-bedroom apartments near Royal Albert Dock that sleep from 5-18 guests.
Liverpool party apartments also include the Fenwick Street Apart Hotel facility that has accommodation right up to a luxurious 4-bedroom apartment that sleeps 13 guests. Rodney House just east of Rope Walks features several apartments with the largest having 6-bedrooms and accommodating up to 32 guests – perfect for large groups including stag and hen weekends.
Party Houses Liverpool
Another option is one of the many Liverpool holiday homes where your group has a whole house to relax in. We’re impressed by Sybil Townhouse in Anfield, which has river views and sleeps 15 in its 5 bedrooms. For a smaller group, Smugglers Cove Cottage is centrally located, sleeps 6 people in its 2 bedrooms and has a nice courtyard seating/dining area.
