New York City remains one of the world’s best cities for nightlife and entertainment, mainly because the choice is so broad with sophisticated cocktail bars, rooftop venues, jazz, live music, huge clubs and underground venues can all be found in different parts of the city. Nightlife is an important part of New York City’s cultural and economic life.

Lower East Side / East Village offers lots of bars, cocktails and late-night energy packed into a relatively small area. Greenwich Village is best for jazz, comedy, live music and more intimate bars. The Red Lion and The Bitter End are examples of the area’s live-music tradition. Williamsburg / Bushwick is best for alternative and electronic nightlife. Go beyond Manhattan and explore at least a couple of the other boroughs, and you’ll get more from your visit. Brooklyn is a borough well worth visiting, with cool neighbourhoods including Williamsburg (known as ‘the new Soho’) and Greenpoint. In the summer, take the subway out to Coney Island for some seaside fun and a proper beach holiday experience for a few hours. Meanwhile, the free ferry to Staten Island is another must, but be sure to get off the ferry and spend time exploring the island before heading back to Manhattan.
