USA CHOICES

The six cities we’ve highlighted below are all great for Group Breaks but there are of course other types of holiday to consider. Let’s take a look at two of the holiday options that America really excels at.

Road Trips

USA Road TripsIf you’ve never driven in the USA you might be surprised at how easy it is. The roads are generally good and petrol prices are much lower than the UK. Brush up on the laws of the road before you go and enjoy that classic American adventure: the road trip.

A big favourite with visitors is to start out in Las Vegas and head out to the Grand Canyon, taking in the 180-acre Springs Preserve and the Valley of Fire State Park on the way. This trip also gives you a chance to drive along a section of the historic Route 66.

Another great trip takes in a big section of Highway 61, known as the ‘Blues Highway’. It runs for 1,400 miles from New Orleans in the south to Wyoming in the north. The section from New Orleans to Memphis is fantastic, heading through the Mississippi Delta on the way. After Memphis, keep heading north through St. Louis to Chicago.

The Pacific Northwest is another great place to hit the road. Start in Seattle, Washington and do a circular route via Portland, Oregon. On the way, take in forests, mountains, lakes, huge waterfalls, the breath-taking Columbia River Gorge and, of course, wonderful coast roads along the Pacific.

Breaks For Music Lovers

USA Music CitiesAmerica is a music lover’s paradise, with many different styles to choose in some iconic locations. A great option is to spend some time in Memphis and hop across to Nashville. Both cities have fantastic music scenes, with Nashville of course being famous for country and Memphis for blues. There are lots of music-related things to see and do between gigs, including trips to Sun Studios in Memphis and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

New Orleans is of course also known for its music. If you love jazz you’ll be in heaven, but you’ll also find blues, country, the local Cajun/Zydeco style, and pretty much everything else. A couple of intimate venues to check out are the Spotted Cat and the Blue Nile but you’ll no doubt discover your own favourites.

The picture is similar in New York City, which is a huge melting pot of musical styles. You could combine your trip with catching an act at the world-famous Madison Square Garden or Carnegie Hall. But there are venues of all sizes that offer even better experiences. In the East Village for example, you’ll find everything from folk and the quirky ‘anti-folk’ scene, to punk, country and rock. New York also offers world-class jazz at venues including the Rum House, the Flatiron Room and Fat Cat.

But the real music capital of the USA is Austin, Texas. Here you’ll find literally hundreds of music venues playing host to some of the best bands and singers in the country. Just about every style of music you can imagine is played in Austin and you’ll also experience a big slice of Texan hospitality. It really is a must for anyone serious about their music.
